Interview with Tony Tambi

What role did you play on the show?

I play(ed) Chukwuemeka; a Nigerian pharmacist.

What’s your character’s story?

Chukwuemeka’s mother and Abishola’s aunt are good friends who both think he will be a better match for Abishola compared to Bob. He gets introduced to Abishola, but their relationship never takes off because of some of his bad habits.

How did you book the role?

Once I read the character breakdown, I immediately knew who Chukwuemeka was and how I wanted to bring him to life. I am half Nigerian and my wife is a pharmacist, so I could relate to his background. All I needed to add was make him a man on a mission trying to win the affections of Abishola. The audition sides gave me the opportunity to improvise by adding a few mannerisms here and there and I felt very confident at the initial audition and the subsequent callback. Nikki and Ken at Valko Miller Casting gave great notes and the whole room was very supportive at the callback.

What other projects are you working on?

The last couple of months have been quite busy as the character of Chukwuemeka is recurring on Bob Hearts Abishola, so we should see him in a few more episodes. The other project I’m currently working on is the second season of Con$equences. It’s a webseries about reformed internet scammers who reinvent their old business, this time only targeting immoral people. The show has an amazing cast and Season 1 has screened at various festivals worldwide while picking up a bunch of acting nominations. The second season will be available by summer of 2020.

How long have you been a 3As member and how has the organization benefited you?

I’ve been a member of 3As for the past four years and it’s usefulness and helpfulness can’t be overstated. I love the camaraderie and networking opportunities that are available to me. The monthly gatherings with Speakers are not only a great source of knowledge, but also provide the necessary encouragement and motivation needed in this industry. Representation is important and I think it’s great to have an organization like 3As that wants to represent and promote African (diaspora) artists.
